Item: Sugar Tongs Description: Bright-cut with Adams
style engraving Hallmark: Sheffield 1777 by Thomas Allen Dimensions: 143mm long;
24.5g weight Comments: An extremely important
pair of early bright-cut sugar tongs. London-made tongs are not fully
hallmarked until 1790 and most pairs in the "sprung-bow form"
generally date from the 1780's and later. This Sheffield made pair prove
that this form were being produced in the mid-1770's and bear a fine set
of early Sheffield hallmarks (the assay office opened in 1773). These
tongs illustrate very crisp engraving in both the bright-cut style and the
earlier etched Adams style floral engraving. The bowls are unusual in
being almost flat and are beautifully decorated with a ring of
bright-cutting.
