Item: Wine Label Description: Sherry; 'Bugle-horn'
Hallmark: London circa 1780 by Hester Bateman Dimensions: 60mm
long
Comments: An extremely rare form of label in the
form of a horn or cornucopia. The front has a flat chased border of feather
edge design with engraved detail. The label is struck twice with the makers
mark of Hester Bateman. The condition is superb with crisp decoration,
original belcher chain and clear marks.
See "Wine Labels 1730-2003" page 83 for a
description of this rare form of wine label and for an illustration showing
a similar plain and later example. The text suggest that this form of label
would have been specially commissioned for Archery societies that used the
bugle-horn as a badge..
