102 Piece Princess Pattern 12 place settings Canteen of Silver Cutlery, London 1898 by Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd

The Service

We are pleased to be offering a rare opportunity to own a straight service of Victorian silver cutlery in the graceful Princess Pattern.  This service provides for eight pieces per 12 place settings, plus six serving spoons.

All the spoons and forks in this service were made by the premier makers, Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Limited, bear hallmarks for London 1898 and are engraved with the same crest to the front. One teaspoon is a slightly later addition by the same maker (London 1910) and does not bear the crest.

The set has 12 of all the main dining pieces and an especially pleasing addition are the good-sized, round bowled soup spoons which are particularly early in date (generally soup spoons with the familiar round bowls are considered to have been first introduced circa 1900-1905 and so these are extremely early examples).

The 24 knives have silver handles and stainless steel blades and are an excellent complement to the set. These are new and hallmarked for Sheffield 2020 and not engraved with the crest.

Officially called Princess Number 1 pattern, this 19th Century pattern has an elegant restrained decoration based on the King’s Pattern shape. It is a scarce and highly desirable pattern that is very rarely found as a full service.
