Set of 6 Dinner Plates, 1789

Details

These are a superb set of six dinner plates made by the specialist plate maker, James Young. They have a Regency style gadroon border that was added by Edward Farrell circa 1815 - the gadroon borders are hallmarked to legitimise the alteration and the scratch weights to the underside were accordingly revised at the same time.

These fabulous plates are in superb condition and with a gross weight in excess of 100 tr.oz., they have a lovely feeling of quality about them. The gadrooning remains crisp throughout and the borders are engraved with a double crest.

The engraved crests on these plates belong to the families Hartopp and Cradock and between the two crests is a baronet's augmentation. Edmund Bunney (1749-1833) assumed the surname and arms of Cradock-Hartopp by Act of parliament in 1777. Edmund was created a Baronet in 1796, served as the MP for Leicestershire (1798-1806) and as High Sheriff for Leicestershire (1781-82). The numbering to the reverse side suggests that this half dozen plates were originally part of a much larger service (we have a seventh in stock). We have a full professional report relating to the crests on these plates that will be made available to the purchaser.
