St. Paul Apostle Spoon, 1604

Details

William Cawdell was one of the major silver spoon makers of the late Elizabethan and James I periods. His spoon are always of the highest quality and this superb apostle spoon is no exception. It has a good hefty 2oz weight and feels like a quality piece in the hand. The cast apostle figure features a fabulous, well detailed, gilt model of St. Paul with his sword. As the patron saint of the City of London, St. Paul was a favourite finial for spoons and this is an especially good example.

Considering the 400+ years since this spoon was made, the condition is fantastic. The apostle remains crisp and the bowl retains a thick rim. there are no dings or dents and the overall patina is lovely. The hallmarks are excellent too with a clear date letter and "C" enclosing a "W" maker's mark. A first class spoon in every respect!
