St James Apostle Spoon, 1637

Details

This fine quality Charles I period silver spoon featuring a well-modelled, cast apostle finial. The apostle depicted is St James the Lesser with a really clear example of his diagnostic fuller's bat and a sacred dove in relief to the nimbus. The spoon has a very good weight of close on 2 tr.oz. and a fabulous set of hallmarks - the leopard's head crowned bowl mark has particularly lovely detail and the three stem marks are crisp too with a very clear "RC" marker's mark for Richard Crosse (apprenticed to the spoon maker Robert Jygges 1625-32). The reverse side of the bowl bears original dot pricked "I.S" initials. The overall condition of the spoon is first class with a lovely thick rim to the bowl and fine patina - a really excellent example with everything you would want from an early 17th century apostle spoon.
