Georgian Fiddle & Thread Canteen of Cutlery

Georgian 51 piece Silver Fiddle & Thread Canteen of Cutlery,

London 1829-35

The Service

We are pleased to be offering an excellent late Georgian period silver 12 place settings canteen in the desirable Fiddle & Thread Pattern.

This is an original service with all pieces bearing the same engraved crest of a dog with front paw placed on a rock. The engraved crest is located to the front of the spoons and to the reverse side of the forks in traditional style (forks were laid with prongs facing the table).

Each piece was hand wrought in London by either the Lias family workshop in 1829 (33 pieces) or William Bateman in 1834/5 (18 pieces). The presence of several serving items is a bonus, especially the 12" long basting or long-handled serving spoon. There is also the opportunity of adding some extra pieces that we have for this set if required.

Fiddle & Thread Pattern

Fiddle Pattern was the dominant flatware pattern of 19th Century Britain, however it stemmed from the same shaped French pattern that had a thread design running around the border. In the UK this became known as Fiddle & Thread. It is a very popular pattern as it treads the fine line between a completely plain design and an ornate design.

This 51-piece service consists of the following:

12 Table/dinner Forks         20.5cm

4 Teaspoons                       14.1cm

12 Dessert  Forks                 17.5cm

Pr Sauce Ladles                17.5cm

12 Dessert Spoons                17.7cm

Basting Spoon                   30.3cm

6 Table/soup Spoons         22.3cm

Pr Salt Spoons                   11.1cm

Total weight of weighable silver 3520 grams (113.2 troy ounces).

Excellent original condition. The forks tines remain full and equal length and the spoon bowls are unworn. The engraved crests are crisp throughout. This set has been hand-polished throughout and is in as good condition as you are likely to find for the period.

This canteen is offered loose. We can supply anti-tarnish cutlery rolls on request. These navy blue rolls have individual pockets to hold 12 items per roll and are available for £15 each.

As with all the canteens available from our web-site, we are happy to send a sample place setting for approval, on receipt of a fully refundable surety payment, prior to purchasing this canteen.
