Pair Square-based Candlesticks, 1757

Details

With its stylish lines, the square-based candlestick is the most popular design of the mid-18th century and this pair were made by a rarely encountered silversmithing partnership. John Hyatt was apprenticed to the important specialist candlestick maker James Gould and entered a joint mark with Charles Semore (later Seymour) in 1757.

These cast silver candlesticks are of the very highest quality with a really hefty weight - they are truly fabulous! The gadroon decoration around the base and knops in the stem add to the visual impact and the engraved coat-of arms to the bases & crests to the removable sconce nozzles are indications of the rich heritage of these candlesticks.

The condition of these candlesticks is superb and the undersides are clearly hallmarked to each corner. The capitals and sconce nozzles are appropriately part-marked too.
