Pair of Georgian Candelabra, 1762/94

Details

These are a fabulous and very scarce pair of Georgian period, cast silver candelabra. They use William Cafe cast candlesticks that are amongst the most desirable form and highest quality as their bases, with finely wrought branches made to match in the later 18th century.

The cast candlesticks were made by the premier specialist candlestick maker, William Cafe (one in 1762 and the other in 1771) and are complete with their original sconce nozzles and so can be used as independent candlesticks too. They are richly decorated with flowers, scrolls and gadrooning around the domed, hexafoil bases and up the knopped stems. A particularly nice touch is that each of the six points to the base is adorned with a different type of flower and similarly there are six flowers to the nozzles and four different flowers trailing down the stem.

The two light branches were made in 1794 by Robert Sharp and the decoration follows the same design as the two original sconce nozzles. The branches sit securely in the candlesticks (with nozzles removed) and make a very impressive sight. The branches are full hallmarked to the fitting tube and appropriately part marked to the lights which can be unscrewed for easier cleaning.

The cartouches to the base of the candlesticks are engraved with a crest which is repeated to the sconce nozzles, candelabra lights and drip pans.

These impressive 16.75" high candelabra make a fantastic pairing and benefit from being in superb condition.
