Puritan Spoon, 1680

Details

This high quality, good-sized silver puritan spoon is a first class example with a lovely hefty weight in the hand. It has the diagnostic plank-like stem with engraved betrothal initials to the reverse terminal and a deep fig-shaped bowl with short rattail to the reverse. As a puritan spoon, it is a relatively late example dating towards the end of the Charles II period and bears a clear set of hallmarks for the master spoonmaker, Lawrence Coles. The condition is superb and the satisfyingly generous bowl retains a thick rim. Puritan spoons are relatively scarce and this is a fine example!
