73-piece Silver Old English Pattern Canteen, London 1897 by George Jackson & David Fullerton

The Service

We are pleased to be offering a comprehensive straight 12 place settings cutlery service in Old English Pattern. The service includes a standard 60 piece flatware service of five dining spoons and forks per 12 place settings with an array of large serving pieces. Knives are offered separately as an optional extra – see below.

All the spoons and forks were hand-wrought by the most important flatware maker of the late Victorian period and bear the same maker’s mark throughout for George Jackson & David Fullerton. The vast majority of pieces bear the date letter for 1897, however some pieces are a little later in date and were presumably later additions to the main service (n.b. other than the date letter they are exact matches). This is known as “a straight service” – i.e. all the pieces are original to each other and bear the same engraved crest of a star to the front terminal.

With its plain and stylish appearance, this is a beautifully elegant service that combines traditional elements such as the oval bowled table spoons (useful either for soup or as serving spoons) and all the necessary pieces for modern dining. Old English pattern pieces by Jackson & Fullerton are generally recognised as the very best in terms of quality and this canteen certainly plays testament to that accolade. Each piece has a good solid weight in the hand.

The serving pieces include a large and satisfyingly hefty soup ladle, a 12” long basting spoon that is also ideal for serving, a pair of useful sauce ladles, a beautifully pierced sugar sifter spoon (perfect for strawberries!) and a set of four salt spoons. The four egg spoons could also be used for other purposes too, such as for coffee or serving hors d’oeuvres.

Old English Pattern

Old English Pattern was first introduced circa 1770 and has always been a very favoured pattern due to its elegant and simple form. It has been produced continually to the present day with a resurgence of popularity in the late 19th & early 20th Centuries.
