The Service
We are pleased to be offering a great opportunity to own this highly desirable Hester Bateman Pattern silver canteen of cutlery. This service provides for 7 pieces per 6 place settings with an additional pair of serving spoons.
All the pieces in this canteen were made in Sheffield by Roberts & Belk and bear appropriate Sterling silver hallmarks for Sheffield 1993.
The service is in mint condition and is unlikely to have ever been used as most pieces were still contained within their original cellophane wrappers.
Hester Bateman Pattern
This flatware pattern is named in honour of the most famous lady silversmith Hester Bateman. As a widow, Hester Bateman took over her husband’s business in 1760, and not only continued to produce but actually expanded the business, which for a woman of 52 years of age in the late 18thCentury was no mean achievement.
Hester Bateman was one of the innovators of the Classical style in English silver and this flatware service portrays many of the features used by her in the production of silver. The bead edge and engraved cartouche were features used by her during the 1780’s. Her fine designs and elegant productions have earned her the sobriquet “Queen of English Silversmiths”.
