58 piece SILVER-GILT FLARE PATTERN CANTEEN of SILVER CUTLERY,
London 1977 by Stuart Devlin
The Service
We are very pleased to be offering a superb quality hand-made canteen of silver cutlery created by the famous Stuart Devlin.
The quality of this table service is second to none, with each piece having a wonderfully hefty feel in the hand (e.g. the table forks weigh 120 grams each). Known as Flare Pattern, the handles of each piece taper towards the button terminal and are textured and gilded in the trademark style of Stuart Devlin.
The service is hand-wrought and was no doubt made by Devlin’s in-house specialist spoonmaker Richard Cook. The bowls of all the spoons have thick bowl tips that are diagnostic of hand-made production where the silver is hammered and thickened where it is needed most and gives balance to a piece. Unlike mass produced hollow-handled knives, these knives have their stainless steel blades soldered to solid silver handles. All the pieces have been forged from a thick gauge of silver giving a heavy feeling of high quality.
Every piece bears a London hallmark for 1977 and includes Queen Elizabeth II’s Silver Jubilee commemorative mark.
