Boxed 68-piece Silver Old English Pattern Canteen, Sheffield 1912 by Hardy Brothers

The Service

We are pleased to be offering a great quality 20th Century silver 12 place settings boxed canteen in Old English Pattern. There are pieces enough to lay out 12 place settings, plus a good selection of serving items.

All the pieces in this cutlery service were made in Sheffield and benefit from having no personalised engravings to them. The vast majority date from Sheffield 1912 and bear the mark of Hardy Brothers. The box also bears a small plate showing that Hardy Brothers were Australian retailers with branches in Sydney & Brisbane. This canteen must have been exported to Australia on commission from the retailers. It may well have returned to the UK in the mid-60’s as five pieces are hallmarked for London 1964/5 with the mark of Garrard & Company (the Crown Jewellers) – presumably to replace missing items.

There are eight round bowled soup spoons, but if used in conjunction with some of the table spoons (the soup spoon of the 19th century), then there are sufficient soup spoons for 12-place settings too. The serving items include a large and heavy soup ladle, a 12” long basting or stuffing spoon, a pair of sauce ladles plus two smaller sugar serving items.

Old English Pattern

Old English Pattern was first introduced circa 1770 and has always been a very favoured pattern due to its elegant and simple form. It has been produced continually to the present day with a resurgence of popularity in the early 20th Century.
