110 Piece Chevron Pattern 12 place settings Canteen of Silver,

London 1906 by Wakely & Wheeler

The Service

We are pleased to be offering an extensive and great quality boxed Edwardian period silver cutlery set.  This service provides for six pieces per 12 place settings.

The silver is in a flatware pattern that we have not previously encountered and have named “Chevron” pattern because of the motif to the reverse of the terminal. The quality of the service is very high with each piece having a beautifully balanced feel as one would expect from a hand-wrought piece of London made flatware. This is a straight service, with all pieces bearing the hallmarks for London 1906 by Wakely & Wheeler.

This is a very elegant and extensive service that has amply catered for the dessert and cheese courses with some great pieces that are not frequently encountered – a stilton/cheese scoop, nut picks with mother of pearl handles and even a set of four 2-handled dishes which would be ideal for after-dinner nibbles such as mints and nuts. The four serving spoons are a departure from the main pattern with delightfully pierced handles – the hallmarks confirm their original inclusion within the service.

The service includes 24 ivory handled knives fitted with stainless steel blades that appear original to the service. These are fantastic quality knives that have a wonderful warm feeling in the hand. The complementing 5 piece carving set has a couple of replacement pieces.

Presentation

This canteen is presented within its original top quality oak box. The box has brass fittings throughout which includes two carrying handles and a central shield to the top which benefits from having no engravings. The drawers are secured with hinged “gate legs”.

Each piece has its own slot to prevent scuffing from its neighbours. A small ivory plate provides the name of the original retailer “Ollivant & Botsford of Manchester”. There is no key to lock the box, but this would be a simple job for a local locksmith if one was required.

Condition

The silver is in excellent polished condition throughout. All forks have full and equal length tinmes and the spoon bowls are unworn. There are no personalised engravings. The box has a shrinkage crack that runs about 1/3 across the top at the back, plus some of the blue baize securing flaps to the inside are missing.

As with all the canteens available from our web-site, we are happy to send a sample place setting for approval, on receipt of a fully refundable surety payment, prior to purchasing this canteen.
