Spoon - Seal top - London 1638 by Jeremy Johnson - 16cm long; 40g - YS/4789

Wrought during the reign of King Charles I, this is a really fine silver seal top spoon made by Jeremy Johnson.

The spoon has a good, cast, decorated seal to the terminal that retains most of its original gilding, plus the original v-notch join to the stem is clearly visible. The spoon has an excellent bowl mark plus three hallmarks to the reverse of the stem, that include the date letter for 1638 (top missing), lion passant and "II" maker's mark. Jeremy Johnson was a major spoonmaker of the mid-17th century, having been apprenticed to Edward Hole.

This Carolean period spoon is in excellent condition with a good unworn bowl retaining its thick edge and a fine antique patina.
