Spoon - Slip Top - London 1637 by Steven Venables - 17.2cm; 46g - AT/4396

This is an excellent Charles I period silver slip top spoon made by the specialist spoonmaker Steven Venables.

The spoon is in fine condition with a good, unworn bowl and fine antique patina. The hexagonal stem is stamped in typical slip spoon fashion with the “SV” maker’s mark and lion passant close to the bowl and the date letter is struck towards the terminal - this was intended to prevent unscrupulous silversmiths later adding an apostle or seal finial - i.e. the location of this mark makes it obvious how the spoon was originally made. The bowl mark is especially crisp and the stem marks are good too, although the date letter is slightly mis-struck and less clear.

This slip top spoon is in excellent condition with a good antique patina. The bowl is full and unworn bowl, whilst the hexagonal stem thickens out towards the terminal as one would expect. A fine example of a 17th century silver slip top spoon.
