Caddy Spoon - Engraved handle with shield-shaped bowl - Birmingham 1797 by Joseph Taylor - 69mm long

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

A rare example of the double struck duty mark within the hallmarks. This Joseph Taylor caddy spoon is one of his trademark pieces from the end of the 18th century. It has a vacant cartouche to the front terminal with no erasures.  Duty on silver was doubled in 1797 to help pay for the Napoleonic Wars, in order for the assay offices to identify which pieces had paid this extra duty, the provincial offices stamped the mark twice.
