Birmingham has never been noted for its production of cutlery and so silver table spoons with Birmingham hallmarks are scarce.

Dating from just four years after the opening of the Birmingham Assay Office, this Old English pattern silver table spoon is an early example from the city. It was made by Edward Sawyer who was one of the very few spoonmakers and clears a great set of bottom-struck hallmarks. The front terminal is engraved with an eagle crest, whilst the overall condition is excellent.
