Spoon - Trefid - Exeter circa 1700 by John Avery - 18.6cm long; 32g - GU/5317

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is a scarce example of an Exeter trefid spoon that bears two marks from the same maker - "IA" in a rectangular punch (once) and a conjoined "IA" in script (thrice). These are the marks of John Avery - see M.11 page 67 in "West Country Silver Spoons and Their Makers" by Tim Kent.

Dating from before the introduction of full sets of Exeter hallmarks in 1701, this spoon bears slightly later dot pricked betrothal initials to the reverse terminal "WR" over "GM" over "1721". The spoons shows vestiges of original mercury gilding and although of light weight is in generally fine condition.
