Faux Filigree Silver Caddy Spoon, 1809

Caddy Spoon - Simulated Filigree - Birmingham 1809 by Cocks & Bettridge - 6cm long; 7.5g - TS/5392
This is a stunning, Georgian period silver caddy spoon with the highly desirable and technically tricky faux filigree decoration.
Made by the Birmingham partnership of Cocks & Bettridge, the quality of the workmanship inside the oval bowl is amazing with a form of decoration that is intended to simulate filigree decoration that was popular at the time. The faux filigree centre is surrounded by embossed beads and scrolls, whilst the gallery is prettily engraved. The bifurcated handle is an attractive feature too and the cartouche remains free from engraving.
Production of faux filigree caddy spoons appear to have been at its zenith in 1809 when the majority appear to have been made by Cocks & Bettridge. This is a fabulous spoon with the bonus of being in excellent condition.
