Georgian 36 piece Silver Fiddle & Thread Canteen of Cutlery,

London 1833-35 by William Eaton

The Service

We are pleased to be offering an excellent late Georgian period (King William IV reign) silver 6 place settings canteen in the desirable Fiddle & Thread Pattern. With complementing 20th century knives, this service provides for six pieces per 6 place settings

This is a straight service, with all the spoons and forks hand wrought in London by William Eaton and bearing the same eagle’s head crest. Each piece is hallmarked for London 1833 to 35 with the “WE” maker’s mark of one of the most important specialist flatware makers of the 19th century. The engraved crest is located to the front of the spoons and to the reverse side of the forks in traditional style (forks were laid with prongs facing the table).

The silver handled knives were made in Sheffield 1928 by Harrison Brothers, the top quality cutlers. These knives bear a different engraved crest, this time a stag’s head with a majestic pair of antlers. Should knives not be required, then they can be removed from the set and we can re-quote without them.

Fiddle & Thread Pattern

Fiddle Pattern was the dominant flatware pattern of 19th Century Britain, however it stemmed from the same shaped French pattern that had a thread design running around the border. In the UK this became known as Fiddle & Thread. It is a very popular pattern as it treads the fine line between a completely plain design and an ornate design.
