This is a very rare Gibson's Patent medicine spoon and the first Scottish example we have encountered. The spoon has a hollow handle to allow the user to control the prescribed dose of medicine by placing a finger over the aperture. This form of spoon was invented in 1827 by Charles Gibson and hence its name. The interior of the bowl is gilt and the underside bears clear hallmarks. The flush hinge is in fine condition, and the handle is free from dents. An excellent example of a much sought after spoon.

A Gibson Patent spoon is illustrated and discussed in "Silver Flatware" by Ian Pickford on page 208 figure 379.
