Hester Bateman Bright-cut Sugar Tongs, c.1788
Sugar Tongs - Bright-cut engraved - London circa 1788 by Hester Bateman - 14.3cm long; 34g - EM/3343
Hester Bateman produced some pretty silver sugar tongs and these are no exception.
Delicately bright-cut engraved to both arms and including original "RD" ownership initials to the bow, these tongs are typical of those produced during the 1780's and used for the all important afternoon tea. The tongs are in fine condition and include a great example of the famous "HB" in cursive script maker's mark for the Queen of English Silversmiths. The presence of a duty hallmark points to a date of production between 1785 and 1790 when Hester retired.
