Wine Label - Sherry; 'Armorial' - London circa 1772 by Hester Bateman - 52mm high; 40mm wide - Ref. No.: EF/9860

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

An extremely rare silver Sherry label with a clear example of the Hester Bateman maker's mark. This label features a demi-eagle emanating from a crown armorial that will have belonged to a notable aristocratic family. Armorial labels were specially commissioned by wealthy families to show off their high status.

The label pre-dates the introduction of the duty mark in 1784 and the style of the maker's mark suggests a date from the early 1770's - the marked entered by Hester Bateman in January 1771 is the closest match.

This important label is in generally good order, however a minor split should be noted (shown in the close-up photo of the reverse between the two marks) and a possible repair just above the "Y".
