Sugar Basket - London 1790 by Hester Bateman - 175mm long x 180mm high; 224 grams - Ref. No.: MH/1744

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

A beautifully elegant silver basket in the taste of the 1780's and 90's. This swing handled basket retains its original gilding to the interior and stands on a domed pedestal foot. Both sides of the body have a superb engraved crest showing the head of a mythical beast. Excellent condition throughout with neither damage nor repairs.

The hallmarks are found to the underside of the base and include a perfect example of the famous "HB" in script makers mark. Hester Bateman retired in 1790 and passed on the family business to her two sons - Peter & Jonathan Bateman. Examples of her work bearing the letter "P" for 1790 are scarce.
