60-piece Silver Irish Celtic Point with Bright-cut Star Pattern Canteen, London 1896 by William Law & Son

The Service

We are pleased to be offering a rare, straight 12 place settings cutlery service in Irish Celtic Point with Bright-cut Star Pattern. This service is a standard 60 piece flatware service of five dining spoons and forks per 12 place settings.

All the spoons and forks were hand-wrought in London on behalf of the Dublin retailer William Law & Son. They are in superb condition with crisp decoration and each piece bears the same engraved crest.

Irish Celtic Point with Bright-cut Star Pattern

This pattern is the quintessential Irish flatware design. It combines the pointed terminal that distinguished Celtic Point from Old English Pattern and is decorated with a superb bright-cut engraved design featuring a star motif to the terminal.

Irish Celtic Point with Bright-cut Star Pattern was first produced in Ireland during the 1770’s. It is found mostly on spoons and so may have been used for serving items to accompany a plainer Old English pattern dining service or as stand-alone tea and dessert sets. It is extremely rare on forks!

By the late 19th century there were no major makers of silver cutlery in Ireland, so the Dublin retailers commissioned  pieces from the major London specialist flatware makers and stamped the goods with their sponsor’s mark – as is the case for this canteen. William Law first began selling silver in Dublin in the middle of the 18th century and by the end of the 19th century were one of the most prestigious of Dublin retailers.
