Lady Maker Mote Spoon, 1735
Sold
mote Spoon - Shell Back - London c.1735 by Ann Hill - 13cm long; 8g - CH/1595
This lovely silver mote spoon was made by the scarcely encountered lady silversmith, Ann Hill and bears her "AH" maker's mark with device above. This mark is likely a variant of her second mark (Grimwade 39) that was registered in 1735 and used until 1737.
The spoon has an attractive shell motif to the reverse of the bowl that was popular in the late 1730's and the fairly simple style of piercing helps confirm the date.
Additionally, the spoon has a diamond-shaped terminal that would have been used to unclog blocked teapot spouts. An excellent Georgian mote spoon in fine condition.
