Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is a superb example of a documented English provincial silver trefid spoon!

The spoon was made in Lewes by Robert Colgate in the late 17th century and has a terrific set of marks to the reverse stem. In addition to the "RC" makers mark, there is also a fleur-de-lys mark that was used by other known Lewes silversmiths. The bowl is in fine condition and includes a beaded rattail to the reverse. The reverse terminal bears the engraved initials "I.F" over "F" over "I.A", which suggests the spoon was handed down in the family with surname "F".

The spoon is in excellent condition with a lovely, antique patina.

Robert Colgate was a spoonmaker of Lewes in Sussex between 1670 and 1700 - See "Sussex Silver & Its Makers" by Timothy Kent (pages 31-32) and "Jackson's Hallmarks" page 523.

Provenance: formerly in The David Constable Collection, The Griffin Collection and The Staniforth Collection. The spoon is illustrated as figure 79 and 80 in the above mentioned "Sussex Silver".
