A particularly interesting silver Madeira label with a clear set of Chester hallmarks. This label was made by recycling a redundant piece of silver. The original marks for London 1751 are still visible for the makers Samuel Herbert & Company who were in production during the 3rd quarter of the 18th century. The form of the marks and the output of the company suggest a likely source for this piece of silver being a cream pail or basket. It was an entirely legal practice to recycle existing plate, so long as it was re-marked (as in this case), but generally an unmarked section would have been used!
