Wine Label - Mountain; Kidney-shape, Gadroon - London circa 1770 by Margaret Binley - 4.9cm wide - JH/7133

This is a fine quality silver wine label with the scarce title "MOUNTAIN" and made by the lady silversmith Margaret Binley.

Made during the early George III period, this kidney-shaped bottle ticket has a chased feather edge border that was the height of fashion at the time. The reverse side is stamped with the distinctive "MB" punch for this lady silversmith and the lion passant guaranteeing sterling standard silver - these help date the label to the years either side of 1770 as Margaret Binley took over her husband Richard's workshop in 1764 following his premature death. This attractive wine label is in excellent condition.

Mountain is a sweet dessert wine from the hills around Malaga in Spain and was the predecessor of Sherry in the UK, being replaced by the latter circa 1790.
