Marrow Scoop - Marrow Bone Club - Edinburgh 1852 by J Mackay - 23.5cm long; 113g - CT/1900</p>

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This magnificent Victorian Scottish silver marrow scoop was specially commissioned by William Mackenzie a member of the Marrow Bone Club - his name is engraved to the reverse. The terminal bears an applied marrow bone motif below 'Nil Nisi Bonum' (translates to "Speak Nothing But Good") the crest and motto of the Club, plus a further engraved crest of a hand holding a wreath.

The quality of this marrow scoop is outstanding. It has an incredibly heavy weight and just has the most satisfying feeling in the hand. The quality of the design and decoration is of the highest order and condition is superb and crisp throughout. A very fine and rare piece of silver.

The marrow scoop was designed to serve and eat marrow, the jelly from beef bones. The savoury fattiness of marrow was highly prized and in Edinburgh from the 1830's, connoisseurs met at the Marrowbone Club in the Flesh Market Close with each member having a heavy silver scoop identical to the one we are offering here. Apparently their number consisted mostly of Lords of Session (the most senior body of Scottish judges) who recorded their proceedings in verse, and ate from plates of solid silver!
