Spoon - Seal top - London 1663 by Robert Fincham - 17.7cm long; 63g - GV/4790

This impressive, early Charles II period silver seal top spoon has a massive decorated seal to the terminal.

At 7.5" long, this is a large spoon and with its good hefty 2oz weight just oozes high quality. The substantial, cast seal is gilt, beautifully decorated (still crisp too!) and there are no personalised engravings to the flat top plate. The stem still has a hexagonal profile, but is flattened and transitioning to the plank-like handles of puritan and trefid spoons which were becoming the more fashionable alternative to seal tops at the time of the Restoration of the monarchy.

The ample, generous bowl is thinning a little towards the leading edge (no loss of shape), but otherwise this spoon is in fine condition. The hallmarks are all good with a great example of the RF mark belonging to the scarcely encountered silversmith Robert Fincham.
