Rattle - Coral, whistle and bells - London 1800 by Peter, Ann & William Bateman - 148mm long - Ref. No.: JB/2788

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is a most attractive Georgian silver coral & bells rattle. The body of the rattle has a really pretty engraved designed and the 8 bells on two tiers are similarly decorated with an engraved design. There is a long coral teether at one end that was not only intended to soothe aching gums, but also to ward off evil spirits. At the other end is a whistle that continues to blow well. The makers mark belonging to the most famous family silversmiths is located to the back of the whistle. Adjacent to the whistle is the retainer ring (with minor repair - see photo) for attaching to a ribbon. The remaining marks are clearly legible and can be found on the collar that holds the coral. A very nice child's rattle!
