Quart Tankard - Hinged Cover; Part fluted & Chased Decoration - London 1704 by Phillip Rollos I - 17.8cm high; 13cm diameter; 1150ml volume; 763g - GN/1493

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is a fantastic quality silver tankard made by one of the most important Huguenot silversmiths Philip Rollos I. The tankard is decorated in the typical style of the Queen Anne period with a fluted lower section and decorated band towards the top. The hinged cover is similarly decorated and fully hallmarked to the match those on the main body. The Britannia Standard hallmarks are generally in good order and the distinctive "Ro" makers mark although part worn can be discerned from the combination of body and cover marks.  There is a later engraved crest of a rampant griifin to the front and a multitude of scratched retailers codes, a dated engraved inscription and original scratch weight to the underside. The condition is excellent throughout with no signs of any damage nor repairs and a good patina. A fabulous quality 2 pint volume tankard by a highly sought after Royal Goldsmith.

Philip Rollos I was appointed 'Working Goldsmith in Ordinary' to King Charles II in 1676 and later worked as a goldsmith to the Crown during the reigns of William and Mary and Queen Anne. He produced some of the most important pieces of the period examples of which feature in the Royal Collection and many museums worldwide. One of his most significant pieces was the enormous Great Silver Wine Cistern owned by Thomas Wentworth, Lord Raby and made for his Berlin ambassadorial suite in 1706.
