Card Case - Royal Exchange - Birmingham 1847 by Wheeler & Cronin - 100mm x 70mm; 73g - GV/3528

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is an excellent castle top card case made by a scarce manufacturer of the type. The high relief scene depicted to the front is the Royal Exchange soon after its completion. The scene is nicely detailed and set amidst a profusion of floral scrolls. An initialled cartouche can be found to the reverse side. Excellent crisp condition throughout with clear hallmarks.

The Royal Exchange is situated in the heart of the City of London's financial district between Threadneedle Street and Cornhill. Since it's inception in 1565 it has been at the centre of London's financial dealings and is a symbol of the City's importance to world banking and commerce. The building depicted on the card case is the third exchange, designed by Sir William Tite and opened by Queen Victoria in 1845. It still stands today.
