Sugar Basket - Pierced Round with Swing Handle, Ruby Red Glass liner and sifter spoon - London 1876 by Edward & Charles Brown - 20cm high with handle up; 13cm diameter (top rim); 380g of weighable silver (755g gross) - IH/9813
This is a stunnng quality, late 19th century silver basket with swing handle and supplied with a fiddle pattern sugar sifter spoon. The quality of the piercing around the body is outstanding and superbly shows off the colour of the original ruby red glass liner. The decoration is in the NeoClassical taste and includes chased festoons around the pedestal foot.
This Neo-classical basket would originally have been used to hold sugar and the supplied spoon is ideal for sprinkling it over fruit, puddings and even breakfast cereals, but these days the basket would be practical for all manner of other purposes too. There is an original crest with script monogram to the cartouche and the sifter spoon bears conforming initials and although a few years later in date was obviously made to complement the piece. The basket and spoon remain in good order throughout with the perfect fitting, original glass in excellent condition with no chips, cracks etc.
