Dessert Knives (6) - Double Shell & Laurel pattern; gilt - London 1820 by Paul Storr - 21.9cm long - CT/3695a

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This set of 6 silver-gilt dessert knives were made by the most important English maker of the 19th century. The handles are decorated in one of Paul Storr's most important patterns - double, shell & laurel.

These Georgian knives have been weighted to the handles and fitted with 20th century stainless steel blades - these make a practicable alternative to the original carbon steel blades which no doubt rusted and were discarded. The knives are all in good order and the decoration is quite crisp. The ends of the handles are engraved with a crest and motto, which although worn can be blazoned as " a boar's head sable langued gules ringed or" and the motto reads "Spero Meliora" (I hope for better things). These knives would originally have been gilt, but the wear to the crests suggests that they must have been re-gilt at some stage. These are a great set of knives at a very competitive price!

The crest on these knives belongs to the family Phillips and given the hallmarks they were probably commissioned for or by William Phillips of Witston House near Newport in Monmouthshire. William was High Sheriff of Monmouthshire in 1806.
