Silver Marcella Wine Label, 1816 by Phipps

Wine Label - Marcella; Rounded Rectangle with Gadroon & Shell Border - London 1816 by Thomas & James Phipps - 4.5cm wide; 13g - CA/4003
Marcella is a very rare name on a silver wine label and this Georgian example was made during the Regency period by the father and son partnership of Thomas & James Phipps.
This label is a rounded rectangle in form with typical Regency style gadroon and shell decoration. The Marcella name is pierced out and the hallmarks to reverse remain clear and legible.
It is assumed that Marcella is an alternative spelling of Marsala the dry or sweet wine, produced in the region surrounding the Italian city of Marsala in Sicily.
