Basting Spoon - Canon handled - London 1715 by Gundry Roode - 40.2cm long; 156g - LS/9843

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

Early 18th century canon-handled basting spoons are quite a rarity and this is a particularly fine specimen. It is a massive 16" long and has a good weight of 5tr.oz. The generous bowl is in fine condition with no wear and has a long, elegant rattail extension to the underside. The hollow handle widens towards the turned finial and original engraved betrothal initials "IS" over "SS" are located towards the terminal. The Britannia standard hallmarks are clear and legible with a good example of the "Ro" maker's mark in heart-shaped punch, plus there is another "Ro" maker's mark hiding towards the finial. The condition is excellent, although a small split at the finial ought to be pointed out for thoroughness (see close-up photo of betrothal initials).
