Spoon - Trefid - Kinsale circa 1710 by Joseph or William Wall - 19.4cm long; 51g - LU/9184

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This is an extremely rare Irish provincial trefid spoon from the rarely encountered town of Kinsale (County Cork). The spoon is stamped with two clear examples of the "W" within a heart makers mark for Joseph or William Wall (see p192, fig 123 of "Collecting Irish Silver" by Douglas Bennett and chaper 5.14 of "Cork Silver & Gold" by Bowen & O'Brien).

The spoon is in very fine original condition with opriginal "D" over "RM" betrothal initials to the reverse terminal (where "D" is the first letter of the happy couples' surname). It has a full shape bowl with a very tiny amount of wear to the tip. The spoon has a nicely shaped trefid terminal and has a fine patina throughout.

This spoon was bought as one of a pair. The second spoon is near identical to the first with the only tangible difference being the slight mis-striking of the mark closest to the bowl junction on the other example, a slightly sharper bowl tip to this and the imperceptible 3 gram difference in weight. Please click the photo below for details and photos of the other spoon which is being sold separately.
