Spoon - Puritan - London 1660 by RW - 189mm long; 58grams - Ref. No.: GC/8523

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

A good heavy gauge puritan spoon made during the year of the Restoration of the English Monarchy. This Charles II spoon has a good hefty weight in the hand and has a thick plank like handle. The bowl is in excellent condition with the transitional form between earlier seal and apostle tops and the later trefid spoons. The stem end is engraved with a betrothal triangle which was probably added a little later in date.

The hallmarks are very good with a clear bowl mark and  two crisp lower stem marks (including a distinctive "R" over "W" makers' mark). The date letter is mis-struck and is the most difficult mark to determine. It is located at the stem end to show that this spoon was made as a puritan spoon and could not be given the addition of a cast finial by an unscrupulous spoon maker (i.e. it would easily be identified as a later addition).
