Elizabethan Seal-top Spoon, 1577

This mid-Elizabethan period seal top spoon has a great set of hallmarks including a rare example of the sun in splendour maker's mark (see final entry on page99 of Jackson Hallmarks). The spoon bears an excellent example of a fluted cushion-shaped seal terminal and bears later dated baptsimal initials to the flat plate. The reverse side of the bowl is also engraved with an early 18th century betrothal triangle and the date "1577" to the stem adjacent to the seal. The spoon is in generally good order, athough the leading edge of the bowl is a little sharp from use. Overall this is a perfectly good example of a 16th century spoon and is competitively priced.
