Silver Lace Back Trefid Spoon, 1692

This is a competitively priced and good example of a laceback silver trefid spoon dating from the William & Mary period.

The spoon has typical raised die-struck decoration around the rattail to the reverse of the bowl and front terminal of the stem. It was made by Stephen Coleman who was part of an important late 17th century spoonmaking dynasty - he was apprenticed to William Petley who in turn was apprenticed to John King.

The spoon has legible hallmarks and is in pretty good condition with a full, unworn bowl. The laceback decoration to the reverse of the bowl is rather worn, but remains crisp to the front terminal where there also some indistinct dot-pricked initials (probably "WP"). The reverse terminal is a little scratched too, but overall this is a decent spoon.
