William & Mary Laceback Trefid Spoon, 1692

Spoon - Trefid; Laceback - London 1692 by Lawrence Coles - 18.9cm long; 45g - SP/2376
Good laceback silver trefid spoons are difficult to come by and this is a great William & Mary example.
Made by the top spoonmaker Lawrence Coles, this trefid spoon has laceback decoration to the front terminal of the handle and to the reverse of the bowl as part of and around the rattail extension. The reverse of the terminal is engraved with scratch engraved initials belonging to the original owner and the bonus of the date "91" beneath which ties in with the date of manufacture and suggests the spoon was given to a child as a baptismal present.
The spoon is in overall fine condition with just a touch of wear to the decoration (but superior to the majority that are found). The hallmarks are in good, legible order too and include the well-used "LC" maker's mark for Coles. Overall a great example of its type.
