74-piece Canteen of King's Rococo Silver Cutlery, London 1920 by Hunt & Roskell

The Service

We are offering a stunning early 20th century silver 12 place settings canteen in a very rare pattern by the most prestigious makers of the period and complete with aristocratic provenance.

The pattern is so rare that it does not appear in pattern books and may well have been an individual commission – it is a variant of the Kings Pattern with a rich mix of flowers and scrolls in the rococo style to both sides of the stem.

The service was made by Hunt & Roskell who were the holders of several royal warrants, including that of Queen Victoria and were the most prestigious London retailer from the mid-19th century through to the early 20th century. The company was first founded by Paul Storr who was the most important English silversmith of the Regency period. The stainless steel knife blades are engraved with the name of the other important London retailer, Garrard & Company.

The service provides for six pieces per 12 place settings with a pair of sauce ladles. All the spoons and forks were hand-wrought in the traditional manner. The quality is outstanding with each piece not only bearing the sumptuous, raised decoration, but also having a good hefty weight in the hand – e.g. individual table forks weigh over 100grams each, a sure sign of the very best flatware.

Every piece bears an engraved “M” to the reverse terminal surmounted by the coronet of a baron. A coronet is a type of crown traditionally worn by nobility at the coronation of a monarch. In heraldry, coronets are often engraved above a crest or initial to show rank. A baron’s coronet is a plain circlet with six pearls, of which four are visible – see close up photo.
