Boxed 127-piece Hallmarked Silver Chippendale Pattern Canteen of Cutlery

Sheffield 1973 by Cooper Brothers & Sons

The Service

This is fabulous 12-piece straight canteen of silver in a stylish 20th Century Pattern. The service provides for ten pieces per 12 place settings with 4 additional serving spoons and a three-piece carving set.

All the pieces were hallmarked in Sheffield 1973 by Cooper Brothers & Son and are contained in a good quality wooden box. Interestingly, the Chippendale pattern is named in honour of Thomas Chippendale who was working in the middle of the 18th century and this set bears the hallmarks celebrating the bicentenary of the Sheffield Assay Office (opened in 1773) – i.e. reproducing the hallmarks from that first year.

The box is nicely presented with two pull-out drawers and hinged gate legs securing them in place. A sign of quality is that each piece has its own slot to prevent scuffing.

There is a good array of dining pieces suitable for modern dining with round bowled soup spoons and a set of coffee spoons in addition to the longer teaspoon. The dessert and dinner knives and the carving set have silver handles and stainless steel blades. The fish eaters are of the superior quality form where they are made from one piece of silver (rather than the type with hollow handles).

The service benefits from having no personalised engravings to the pieces and is in excellent used condition.

Chippendale Pattern

This pattern was named in honour of the famous English cabinet maker Thomas Chippendale. The edges of each piece have a wavy raised line, which are reminiscent of the mouldings to be found on much of his furniture.
