Wine Label - White Wine; Shaped-Oval with Outer Pierced Framework - London 1780 by Hester Bateman - 5.5cm wide - LD/3917

This is a stunning silver wine label made by the "Queen of English Silversmiths", Hester Bateman.

The label is titled "WHITE" and has an elegant, engraved shaped-oval to the centre with a twisted rope-work design forming an outer, coiled frame. The reverse side is engraved with "H" and "F" to either end of the reverse side, plus is clearly stamped with the desirable "HB" script maker's mark and a lion passant. The form of the label, working period of the maker and the lack of a duty mark (introduced in 1784) can accurately date this piece to circa 1780.

Owing to its fragility, this type of label is often found damaged or repaired, however this piece has been well looked after and is in fabulous condition.
