Spoon - Seal top - Salisbury circa 1630 by Thomas Senior - 180mm long; 48g - Ref. No.: OP/2281

Sorry, this item is out of stock.

This gilt seal top spoon has a fantastic cast terminal. The large baluster seal finial is very reminiscent of those found on London-made spoons of the early Elizabethan period (see our 1560 example for such a spoon) and similar Salisbury made spoons can be seen as figure 28, page 28 in "Salisbury Silver & Its Makers 1550-1700" by Tim Kent. The spoon is gilt all over and has a full unworn bowl. The seal is crisp and bears engraved dot pricked betrothal initials to the flat terminal "E" over "NH".

The spoon bears a single mark to the bowl. This mark is a turreted castle within a circle and has been attributed by Kent to a Salisbury town mark used by Thomas Senior during the 1630's (see page35 and mark 8 of "Salisbury Silver").
