72 Piece Silver Feather Edge Pattern Canteen of Cutlery,

London 1892/1897

The Service

We are pleased to be offering a lovely, elegant Victorian silver cutlery service in Old English with Feather Edge Pattern.

This canteen is ideal for someone who wants a good-looking, top quality service at a very competitive price and in superb condition! It has the basic pieces for a 3-course dinner service, but does not have the frills of other services where a premium may need to be paid for a box and extra pieces. It is crested exactly the same throughout, and although half the spoons and forks were made in 1892 and the other half in 1897 you cannot see the difference between them! Furthermore, good quality modern knives that do not bear the crest, have been added to accompany the set.

The service provides for six pieces per 12 place setting and all the spoons and forks are London made by two top makers – the 1892 pieces by Aldwinckle & Slater and the 1897 pieces by Jackson & Fullerton – 24 of each. Presumably the first set was added to five year later with identical pieces. Each piece bears a fabulous engraved crest of a mermaid with looking glass.

The table and dessert knives are hallmarked Sheffield 1962 and made by CJ Vander Ltd. They have good solid silver handles with stainless steel blades. They do not bear the engraved crest.

Old English Feather Edge Pattern

Old English Pattern was first introduced circa 1770 and the addition of elegant engraved decoration along the border of the handle was first seen within the first decade of production. The feather edged border gives the pieces an extra feeling of quality and breaks up the plain Old English pattern.
